SJS Quick Tip #1 : Create "Yes" Days

The Sunday Jumpstart Podcast Quick Tip #1 Create Yes Days By Jessica Lauren.jpg

โ€œYou can do anything, but not everything.โ€

-David Allen

I am a recovering people pleaser. In the past, if you ran up on me and invited me somewhere or asked me for a favor chances are I'd probably hurl an automatic "yes" at you. Not because I necessarily wanted to but because I thought it was the nice thing to do. As much as I wanted to be the "nice girl" I had to stop. I was in a chronic state of overwhelm + exhaustion all๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ the ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ time ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ! I was giving out way too many yeses and it was depleting me of all my ever-loving energy. So what did I start to do? Start saying "No" hard af!

Jessica, can you babysit my kids? No.

Do you want to go out to dinner tomorrow, Jessica? No.

Can you help me with my homework? No.

It felt good to finally stand my ground + give out "no's" left and right. Once I strengthened my no muscle, I was ready to open myself up to start saying yes again. However, this time around I made sure my yes was genuine.

As a result, I grabbed my planner and scheduled in specific days where I would be intentional about saying Yes! For instance, I get a ton of requests to help people with their podcasts.  Now let's say I was free on Wednesday the 15th. I'd schedule maybe an hour where I'd be open to letting folks "pick my brain" about podcasts. So if I got a request, I'd send them the link to my calendar that had three 20 minute slots. Once those slots were filled then that's it. I could go back to saying no until I decided to schedule in another yes day.  Super simple right?

Creating yes days helped me set boundaries while still being open to being helpful to others.

If your calendar and commitments have been overwhelming you then today's #QuickTip is for you. Quick tip is a new SJS series.  Every Wednesday we'll get together and quickly chat about a simple, actionable tip that can help you reset, refocus + power through the rest of your week!
